19th century theatres in istanbul

2005-2007

research and exhibition

This project is an exhibition of 2D reconstructions of historical İstanbul theaters, which are to a great extent disappearing.  The paintings are prepared in watercolour under the light of researches made in the archives.

İstanbul -the capital city of Ottoman Empire- was one of the many prominent cultural centers of 19th century Europe. A cosmopolitan and extremely colourfull life style was adopted in İstanbul which was of a privileged status in the Empire. Theater in the traditional Western style was brought to life in this ambience and the foundations for the Turkish theater which was to be improved in Republic Era were laid in this period.
